The focus
of the 2012 Durward W. Owen Risk Management College is risk management and
insurance education for professional staff, alumni/ae and volunteers of
fraternal organizations. We wish to assist and advise all those involved in the
fraternal community to deliver a consistent message to their members and
provide the leadership of each organization with the knowledge and tools to
appropriately prevent and control their exposed risks.
We are pleased that once again Lori Hart, Ph.D.
(Director of Alcohol Education, Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and Speaker,
CAMPUSPEAK, Inc.) and Kim Novak (NovakTalks & Hazing Prevention.Org Board
Member) will lead Track I. The primary focus will be on FIPG education as
it relates to alcohol, risk management, event planning, hazing and prevention
efforts.
The consultants working with chapters on a daily
basis have the best opportunity to educate, prevent and create change.
The training will provide them with the best tools to help engage our
undergraduates in conversations focused on harm reduction.
Track I Agenda
Track II will be geared to directors and
executives and will cover topics such as:
§
Trends
in fraternity/sorority claims
§
Greek
Organizations: An Industry Under Attack
§
Mental
health issues
§
Managing
situations
§
Inter/national
organizations going local
§
Staff
leadership
Track II Agenda
Additionally,
the Alcohol
Skills Training Program facilitated by Dr. Jason Kilmer will be offered
the day following the College on Wednesday June 27th. ASTP, developed by Alan Marlatt,
utilizes motivational interviewing strategies (a non-judgmental,
non-confrontational approach used to prompt thinking about or commitment to
changing behavior) for use with groups and attempts to elicit personally
relevant reasons for changing drinking.
It is acknowledged that abstinence is the most risk- or harm-free
outcome, yet also acknowledges that any steps toward reduced risk are steps in
the right direction -- thus, the program focuses on strategies and skills for
drinking in a less dangerous or less risky way for those who make the choice to
drink (and who are hoping to reduce the likelihood of experiencing unwanted
consequences). In this workshop, an
extension of the ASTP for use in the Greek System will be described, and participants
will learn about program components and will gain practice with motivational
interviewing strategies.
